In and Around Shigatse; Ngor Monastery

Shigatse is a very busy bustling city.

Drive and visit to Ngor Monastery about 20 miles from Shigatse

Large house with animals below, humans above.

Outstanding in her (barley) field.

Our road to Ngor Monastery

Our driver is pleased to arrive.

Ngor Sakya Monastery, 1427, demolished in the Chinese invasion and partly rebuilt.

Our wonderful guide. We were allowed to take more photos in this monastery than in others, with only the room of original 1427 items off limits for photos. Although it was dark for photography, I took them anyway!

Buddha statues behind the glass - perhaps 1000 of them. Rooms with these cabinets were also often the library - many of the long narrow books would be behind these glass doors.

His job was to keep the drum and cymbals going.

iPhones and other devices everywhere! I had cell reception all over Tibet, so I'm sure it was no problem for them.

The Abbot was delightful and welcoming! We were served crackers and yak butter tea and talked about his life.

The women's room is on the left.

Monks debating the finer points of Buddhist scripture. It was delightful to watch them.

Drive back to Shigatse

Fine bike!

The blue box is a boxed lunch we had left over. Growing barley is hard work!

This man and his family (next photo) invited us into his farm home to look around.

Cokes are everywhere!

Putting the kettle on.

Spinning wheel.

Quickly it is boiling!

Neighbors moving something with donkeys.

The Coke is good! And nice fancy pants, too!

Showing the whole house.

Baking adobe bricks in the sun.

Quite a few tractors being used by farmers in this area. I saw them being used to pull a wagon, but didn't see them out in the fields.

Walk around the circumference of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery

Prayer drums line most of the circumference.

Religious scenes painted on the rocks.

The walk takes us high above the city.

Looking back at Tashi Monastery (on the right)

Our guide pointed out that the flat roofed homes in the foreground were the full size of Shigatse only 15 years ago!

Under repair and not open to visitors.

I'm not fond of heights, but this guy seemed quite happy.

Grown extensively beyond the old town area!

Old Market

Part of that older area is an old market. We are now negotiating for gifts.

We stayed in quite a large and fancy hotel (Gesar Hotel)

Hotel lobby.

Visiting Tashi Lhunpo Monastery

We walked the circumference yesterday; this morning, our last day here, we go in.

Several swastika crosses in turquoise have a meaning unrelated to Nazism.

Beautiful paintings in this monastery - I sprung for the 5 Yuan to take photos inside.

Ancient inner courtyard

We leave Shigatse for the drive back to Lhasa

Many city street look like this - stores in bays and bustling activity.

Out the beautiful gate for another adventure!
