Patagonia, Part 6

Chilean Fjords and Glacier Alley

The Chilean Fjords, Magellen Strait, Beagle Channel, Glacier Alley, and our southern point, Cape Horne. The first photo shows the ship's path through the fjords. After reaching Cape Horne, the ship comes back up the channel to Ushuaia, the last photo page.

There are 7 parts to this photo tale, and all seven show up as links on the left. If your browser doesn't show those links, use the footer.

Our last trip ashore to a huge glacier, this time Pia Glacier above and below)

Pia Glacier is in the Beagle Channel, as we approach Glacier Alley.

Great beauty in the subtle colors of sea and ice, and our splash of orange!

This map also shows our journey, and highlights the glaciers we'll see in Glacier Alley. See the small names at the southern end of the Darwin Ice Sheet.

Our group gets drinks and snacks and takes possession of the chairs facing the glacier show.

This, above and below, was the most dramatic glacier we saw on the trip. However, I only had my cell phone camera at the time and the show had started before I realized that I needed more camera. The glacier is huge and the waterfalls very dramatic. This is the Romanche Glacier.

Glacier Holanda, I believe

And Glacier Italia

Cape Horne

We heard for several days that our visit to Cape Horne depended on the weather and it is often not good for the landing or the climb. We had strong cold wind, rain, and IMO some sleet, but fortunately we could do the landing. I was surprised at how much this little island and monument impressed me.

Although it appears that there was once a rail lift that went up this steep hill, there was no such equipment. We climbed the steep stairs you can see from the rocks to the clifftop.

We looked quite padded and waterproof!

Looking back from near the top

Another view of the climbers

At the top, there was a bit of a hike to the Cape Horne Monument, homage to all of the sailors who lost their lives in the rough seas rounding the cape.

Quite beautiful and powerful

And we head back to the ship from our last great shore visit!
